Cloud formation occurs when water vapor condenses around tiny particles in the atmosphere. Rising air cools to its dew point, causing water molecules to collect on condensation nuclei like dust or salt. Different atmospheric conditions and heights create distinct cloud types, from low-lying stratus to high-altitude cirrus.
Classification System
Clouds are classified by height and appearance. Low clouds (0-2km) include cumulus, stratus, and stratocumulus. Mid-level clouds (2-6km) comprise altocumulus and altostratus.
